is the result of a course of observation, that commenced full
sixty years ago)-has been engrossed (I say) by the keeping the
minds of the rising generation, excluded from the whole field of
politics and morals: poetry and the empty or delusive sortof
literature stiled classical being the pursuits to which the univer-
sal attention has all along been endeavoured to be by whatsoever
of the matter of reward has ever been applied to so much as the
show of merit; idleness, dissipation: and drunkenness regarded
as virtues, and as such secretly cherished, rather than that the
minds of the ruling few in their growing state should be turned
towards the science so aptly stiled by you, the social science¬

their final downfall:—Oxford, in which withouf instruction in
any shape, except the little that would originate in my own un-
furnished, uncultivated and unassisted mind, I consumed in
waped idleness, under the notion of receiving an University edu-
cation between the age of 13 and that of 20, after five spent in
learning Latin and Greek at the great public school of Westmins-
ter (another poison-institutting seminary) five or six of the most
precious years of my life.
The following documents will, I flatter myself, be not uninte-
resting to you.
Sr. Jeremias Bentham, Londres.
time propia.
