Rape of Sabines with its basso-rilievo, is a work 
of Gian Bologna which was placed there in 1583. 
Gian Bologna after he had’finished a group of a 
young man holding up a young woman in his arms 
with an old man at his feet, called his friends toge- 
ther, to tell him what name he should give it; and it 
was agreed to call it the Rape of Sabines, a meaning 
that was helped by a bas-relief in bronze of the Rape 
of the Sabines, inserted in the pedestal, and which is 
of greater artistic value than the statue itself. — Un- 
der the side arch is the fine group' modelled and cast 
in bronze of 
Judith slaying Holofernes by Donatello, who 
engraved his name on it. — The group is said to be 
emblematical of the expulsion of Walter of Brienne, 
(the Duke of Athens in 1343) and to have been erec-
