Calpurnius, who dedicated it to Octavian
Augustus, as is indicated in the following in¬
scription, placed in the front :

The inscription found in the portico of the
temple, informs us that the architect's name
was L. Coccejus.
The Christians afterwards dedicated this
magnificent temple to the deacon St. Procul¬
lus, who was born at Pozzuoli, and suffered
martyrdom at the same time as St. Januarius.
The body of St. Procullus is preserved in the
church, with those of other saints : he is con¬
sidered the protector of the city.
Pozzuoli had likewise several other magni-
ficent temples, amongst which might be dis¬
tinguished that of Diana, ornamented with a
100 beautiful columns, and the statue of
Diana, which was 15 cubits in height. It is
