ORATORIO RUCELLAI.
thern side, by Memmi, is the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The paintings on the southern side represent the miracles
of S. Domenico and of S. Peter Martyr. — On the altar is a
marble crucifix sculptured by Pieratti, and a painting repre¬
senting a miracle of S. Jacob, by A. Allori. — In the Tribune
are some figures of saints painted by A. Allori.
Not far off from the entrance of this Chapel is an altar
with an ancient painting by S. Memmi, and at the sides two
Saints by Bernardino Poccelti. — The Crucifix on the next
door is by Stefano dal Ponte Vecchio, scholar of Giotto. — In
the second cloister, called Chiostro Grande, are fifty lunettes,
painted by Lodovico Cigoli, A. Allori, Santi di Tito, C. Gam¬
berucci, Bernardo Poccetti, B. Velio, G. Pagani, and others.
On the left of the Church of S. Maria Novella, is a small
street, called della Croce al Trebbio, leading to a small space
of the same name, in the centre of which is a granite column
with a capital, on which are sculptured the symbols of the
Evangelists. — The Cross with basreliefs in stone surmoun¬
ting the Column , is attributed to Giovanni Pisano. — Ac¬
cording to the gothic inscription, this cross would have, been
raised in 1306, perhaps to remember some victory on the
Paterine heretics.
From this piazzetta we enter the Via delle Belle Donne,
leading to the Quadrivio di S. Sisto, where the Via del Sole,
and the Via della Spada end.
Following this last, we shall see the Oratorio Rucellai, or
of the sepulchre, called also Chiesa di S. Pancrazio. The de¬
signs of this oratory is by Leon Battista Alberti, who con-
structed there in 1467 a small chapel, quite simile to that of
the sepulchre of Jerusalem.
The Via dei Federighi, by an other street called dei Pal¬
chetti, leads to the
Vigna Nuova, where is the Palazzo Rucellai (N° 4114)
by Leon Battista Alberti. — The Palace was built between
1456 and 1470 — The Vigna Nuova issues in the
Via Borgo Ognissanti, one of the widest streets, and la¬
king its name from the Church of S. Salvatore d' Ognissan¬
