On the other side of the Church is the Chiostro Verde, so
called from the frescoes of Paolo Uccello, made with green co¬
lour (terra verde ). — Paolo Uccello has been one of the first
artists that have practised perspective drawing. — Close to
the door, by which you descend in the Closter, is a painting
on wood by S. Arelino and representing S. Vincenzo, S. Ca-
terina di Siena, and the Archangel Raphael.
At the right of the cloisters is situated the Cappella degli
Spagnoli, painted by Taddeo Gaddi and S. Memmi. — The for¬
mer represented on the western wall, S. Thomas, surrounded
by the Angels, by Prophets, and by Evangelists.— Virtue and
Science, in female figures, are close to him. — The first figure
by the side of the window represents the Civil Law, beneath
which is Justinian’s portrail. — The second, Canon Law and
Pope Clement V. — The third is speculative Theology, with
Peter, Master of sentences. — The fourth is Practical Theo¬
logy, and S. Boethius. — The fifth, Faith and Dionysius the
Areopagite. — The sixth, Hope and John of Damascus. — The
seventh Charity, with S. Augustin. —The eigth, Arithmetic,
and Pithagorus. — The ninth Geometry with Euclid. — The
tenth, Astrology with Ptolemy. — The eleventh, Music and
Tubal Cain. — The twelfth, Logic and Aristotle. — The thir¬
theenth, Rhetoric with Cicero. — The fourteenth Grammar
and Priscian — Gaddi also painted the vaults, representing
S. Peter on the waters, the Resurrection of Our Lord, the
Ascension and the Descent of the Holy Ghost.— The orna¬
ments were added by Poccelti.— The other frescoes adorning
this Chapel are by S. Memmi, who intended to represent on
the eastern side the Church Militant. — In this painting is
the copy of S. Maria del Fiore, when left by Arnolfo. —
That figure dressed in white, whit a meagre appearance and
reddish beard, is the portrait of Cimabue.— The other figure
by the side is Memmi. — One will also perceive the por-
traits of Lapo and Arnolfo. — The next figure by the side of
a Knight of Rhodes. is the portrait of Petrarca, and that
young woman placed between other seated women, dressed
in a green robe with flowers, is Laura. — On the nor¬
