artist which has been preserved to our time. It was
painted in 1413 for the high altar in the church of the
Monastery called degli Angeli to which Don Lorenzo
belonged; but about the end of the sixteenth century it
was removed from that place, and people then believed
it lost, until it was found again in 1830 in the Abbey
of San Pietro at Cerreto near Certaldo, by the commen
tator of Vasari, in an artistic journey in Val d’Elsa.
This splendid master piece contains more than a hun-
dred figures. It was brought to this Gallery in 1866,
and restored under the direction of Signor Ettore Franchi.

41. LORENZO MONACO.
Triptyck. In the middle is the Virgin sitting on a
throne with the divine Infant standing on her lap in
the act of blessing. Behind the throne stand two an¬
gels in adoration. Right and left St. John the Baptist,
St. Bartholemew, St. Taddeus and St. Benedict. In the
three other compartiments is the Saviour, the Angelical
Messenger and the Virgin. Under the Madonna the words:
« Ave gratia plena Dominus tecum. An. D. MCCCCX. »

This painting was formerly in the subterranean ora¬
tory of the church of Monte Oliveto near Florence.
