quoad per bonos mores licuit. Inde, rerum affluentia & ocio abundantes, opportunitate admoniti at allecti, eò
deuenere, vt etiam quæ ad voluptates explendas facerét,
ſectarentur, quicquid ad lautitiem venustatem vſpiam
excogitari poſſet, adiungerent, neceſſitati feciſſe ſatis,
leue quidem eſſe exiſlimantes, commoditati proſpexiſſe
ingratum, vbi offenderet operis inelegantia. Hincpyra-
midum miracula, amphitheatrorum moles, inſanæ pala-
tiorum ſubſtructiones, templorum ſtupendi fornices, hinc
arcus, porticus, mauſolea, et in modum prouinciarum ex-
tructæ thermæ. Magna illi ædificabant, vt posteris ma-
gni eſſe viderẽtur, operis verò pulchritudinem, facile ad-
ducebantur vt crederent ab infestis hostibus impetraturá
vt iras temperarent, atinuiolatam ſe eſſe paterentur. Ergò præstantiſſimi veteres, vt eſſet ædificandi aliquæ
certa & constans ratio, quæ de huiuſmodi rebus ab aliis
tradita, & a ſe excogitata erant, mandarunt literis, ex
Græcis Agatarchus, Democritus, Anaxagoras, Cteſiphó,
Metagenes, Ictinus, Carpion, Philo, Hermogenes, Arge-
lius, Satyrus, & alii quidam, ex nostris Fuffitius, Var-
ro, P. Septimius, Cor. Celſus. Horumpræclariiſſma mo-
numenta (prò dolor) temporum iniquitate, aut bominum
negligentiainterierunt. Reſtabat vniusex tanto veluti
naufragio M. Vitruuii Pollionis opus vix ſatis ex meri-
to laudandum, ſed adeo affectum, maculoſum & vlcero-
ſum, vt ne ab auctore ſi reuiuiſcat, ſatis agnoſcatur. Id effecit vt Vitruuii præter nomen, iam multa retro ſæ-
