De oppugnatoriis defenſoriisq̃́ rebus, & primum
de arietis inuentione eiusq̃́ machina. # Cap. XIX.

DEhis rebus quæ potui dixi, reſtat mihi de
oppugnatoriis rebus, quẽadmodum ma,
chinationibus, & duces uictores, & ciui-
eates defenſæ eſſe poſſint. Primum ad oppugnatiões
aries ſic inuentus memor atur eſſe. Carthaginenſes
ad gades oppu gnandas caſtra poſuerunt, cum aũt ca
ſtellũ ante cœpiſſent, id demoliri ſunt conati, poſted-
ꝗ̃ non habuerunt ad demolitionem ferr amenta, ſum
pſerunt ti gnum, idq̃́ manibus ſuſtinentes capiteque
cius ſummum murum continẽter pulſantes, ſummos
lapidum or dines deiiciebant, & ita gradatim ex or
dine totam cõmunitionẽ diſſipauerunt, Poſtea quidã
faber Tyrius noie Pephaſmenos hacrõne, et inuẽtio
ne inductus, malo ſtatuto ex eo alterum trãſuerſum
uti trutinam ſuſpendit, & in reducendo & impellen
do uehementibus plagis deiecit gaditanorũ murum. Cetras aũt Calcediõus de materia primurn baſim ſu
biectis rotis ſecit, ſupraq̃́ cõpegit arrectariis & iu-
gis uaras, & in his ſuſpendit arietem coriisq̃́ bubu-
lis texit, uti tutiores eſſent, qui in edmachinatiõe ad
pulſ andum murum eſſent collocati. Id autem ꝙ tar-
dos conatus habuerat teſtudinem arietariam appel-
lare cœpit. His tũc primis gradibus poſitis ad id ge
nus machinationis, poſtea cum Philippus amyntœ fi
