Alberti, the famous architect, geometrician, and
writer on art. It is not quite finished. Following
towards the door the next monument is one recently
erected to Fossombroni, the great Statesman and political -
economist who died only a few years ago.—
The last is that of Galileo, which is placed directly
opposite to Michæel Angelo’s, perhaps to illustrate the
fact that Galileo was born on the very day that Michæl -
Angelo died. — After duly examining the rest
of the monuments in this most interesting church,
enter the carpet manufactory to the left, where are
some fine frescoes by Giotto and his school.— On
leaving the church of Santa Croce observe on the
Piazza a house decorated in fresco painted by Giovanni -
da San Giovanni and Matteo Rosselli, and
which has been exposed to all the changes of season
for the last 200 years; it will be seen, that where
the frescoes are protected by the projecting roof, they
have preserved all their freshness and brilliancy;
whereas lower down they have suffered considerably, -
from being exposed to a northern aspect.
CASA BUONARROTI. — Enquire the way to the
via Ghibellina which runs parallel to the Piazza on
your right; in this street is the house of the Buonarroti -
family, n° 7588, which is still inhabited by the
descendants of Michæel Angelo,one of whom, a painter
and professor of the Florentine Academy, has his
Studio near the Piazza Santa Croce. Enter this house
